Stereotactic Breast Biopsy

Advanced Solutions Are Here

Providing patients in our communities with state-of-the-art breast cancer diagnostic and treatment options is one of the primary missions of Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital and the SBA Cancer Center. In keeping with our high standard of care, we have the availability of on-site-stereotactic breast biopsy services.

When digital mammography equipment detects abnormalities in the breast, a biopsy is generally the next step to determine if the abnormality is cancerous. Before the availability of stereotactic breast biopsy, a surgical biopsy was the most common option.

About the Procedure

During the procedure, the physician uses a hollow needle to extract the tissue needed for the biopsy. The only incision that will be used is the small cut for the needle, meaning scarring will be minimal to non-existent.  Patients undergoing a sterotractic breast biopsy generally leave the hospital the same day, and the procedure itself is performed under a local anesthetic. Most patients are back to their normal activities within a day.

This procedure will allow patients to receive their results quickly and efficiently cutting down on the inevitable stress and anxiety associated with a possible breast cancer diagnosis. The results provided through this advanced technology are as precise as possible.
