Comprehensive Rehabilitation Services for All Ages

Susan B Allen is a center of trusted, expert physical, occupational, and speech therapy services, helping rehabilitate patients who have experienced an injury, accident, or illness that have impacted their daily function.  Each patient receives a complete evaluation by a licensed therapist, and a recovery plan is developed in collaboration with the client.  Treatment is client-centered and individually tailored to each patient’s unique needs. PHYSICAL THERAPY

Physical therapy helps clients of all ages maximize their daily physical function, whether that involves obtaining peak sports performance, returning to work and hobbies after surgery, or simply helping clients regain  safe access their home and community after injury.  Licensed Physical Therapists and Physical Therapy Assistants utilize a variety of manual therapy techniques, graded therapeutic exercises, biomechanical analysis, dry needling, and other physical agents to facilitate patient recovery from:

  • Sprains, strains, and fractures
  • Sports injuries
  • Neck and back injury
  • Musculoskeletal pain, headaches, TMJ (jaw) pain
  • Post-surgical recovery (joint replacement, bone and tendon repair, post-amputation)
  • Tendinopathy and joint pain/arthritis
  • Cancer related deficits
  • Acute and chronic neurologic conditions (brain injury, stroke, Parkinson’s, MS)
  • Postural deviations
  • Balance and vestibular disorders
  • Edema management
  • Workplace injury

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

Occupational therapy at SBA treats a variety of patients across the age range in settings including outpatient, inpatient hospital, and home health. Licensed Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants collaborate with ordering physicians, other members of the rehab team, and even caregivers to benefit the patient, maximizing therapeutic outcomes.

Occupational therapy works with patients with a variety of deficits or upper extremity injuries, such as:

  • Sprains, strains, and fractures
  • Cumulative trauma injuries
  • Post-Surgical recovery (hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder)
  • Tendinopathy and joint pain/arthritis
  • Acute and chronic neurologic conditions (brain injury, stroke, Parkinson’s, MS)
  • Fine motor coordination deficits and upper extremity weakness
  • Custom splint fabrication

In the outpatient clinic, SBA has the only Certified Hand Therapist in Butler County specializing in rehabilitation of the upper extremity including the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand. Following a custom evaluation, therapy interventions include manual therapy techniques, graded therapeutic exercises, use of physical agent modalities such as therapeutic ultrasound and electrical stimulation and education on activity modifications.
 

While treating inpatients in our hospital and home health, occupational therapy focuses on regaining independence and confidence with activities of daily living through therapeutic activities, recovery from surgery or injury, education on safety in the home environment, adaptive equipment training, and customized home programs.  For more information about the services provided by the Physical Rehab Department, please call 316-322-4580.  
 

SPEECH THERAPY

Speech-language pathologists (SLP), as defined by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA), are professionals who hold the ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP), which requires a master's or doctoral degree. ASHA-certified SLPs complete a supervised postgraduate professional experience and pass a national examination. Demonstration of continued professional development is mandated for the maintenance of the CCC-SLP. They also must hold a Kansas state license. At Susan B. Allen, SLPs are an integral member of a patient’s care team.

Who benefits from SLP services?

Anyone may be referred for evaluation and therapeutic intervention for communication/swallowing disorders. Diagnoses include:

  • Stroke, resulting in speech, language, voice, or cognitive deficits, and/or swallowing disorders.
  • Parkinson’s disease-voice and swallowing deficits.
  • Head and neck cancer-swallowing deficits, scarring, range of motion deficits.
  • Head injury.
  • Cervical spine surgery resulting in voice, and/or swallowing disorders.

SLP services are provided for hospital inpatients, outpatients, and in the home through Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital’s Home Health Agency.

Speech therapists at SBA also provide modified barium swallow studies to inpatients and outpatients in conjunction with the diagnostic imaging department to diagnose and treat swallowing disorders (dysphagia.)
